Competition, competition and just more of them any place you look today. In this article we’re going to talk about long tail keywords and how you can discover your very own list for free, reduce your competition, rank better and of course get some traffic in.
Let’s say that your example.com WordPress site is about auto insurance, it does not matter if you are an actual insurance agent, or just a person who writes tips and articles on that subject, now we are going to do some very simple public long tail keyword research using the free tool from http://www.google.com/sktool just to get some ideas.

Auto Insurance is just the start
The long tail keyword (phrase) we are working with today is auto insurance
If you are on a small budget, or just a local agent who does not operate nationwide the best and the safest way to optimize your car insurance business is right in your area, meaning that you need to cover your hometown first, all areas around you and as well as the state your provide your insurance services in.
Auto Insurance is very broad term and according to Google’s SK Tool there are 150,000 of monthly searches. What does this mean to you as local agent, not much right? Well 150,000 monthly searches means that this is high-competitive keyword phrase and without some serious budget you won’t be able to reach it, however that’s why we’re covering your very own area where getting Top 5 should not be a problem.
On this screenshot we were searching for auto insurance and down below you’ll see the searched data. Since we are directing our searches for your local customers, we’ll need to include your city and combine it with the previously selected auto insurance. So let’s say that you are in New York, NY, your first long-tailed keyword should be New York Auto Insurance.
The New York Auto Insurance data shows that this phrase is being search 1,000 times on monthly bases and this applies only for Google.
Once we got that now let’s see what other related searches we have for New York Auto Insurance
- New York Auto Insurance – 1,000 searches
- New York Auto Insurance Quotes – 280 searches
- Cheap Auto Insurance in New York – 52 searches
- New York City Auto Insurance – 33 searches
- New York Auto Insurance Companies – 33 searches
- New York Auto Insurance Rate – 25 searches
- Commercial Auto Insurance New York – 20 searches
By combining all of the above and if every phrase is properly optimized you could potentially have 1,443 visits to your website, that’s the extra add-on to your current traffic.
How to optimize long-tailed keywords?
If you are focusing on local search only your home page/landing page title should look like this:
New York Auto Insurance | Auto Insurance Quotes in New York, NY
That’s all, you don’t have to go crazy by including all of the phrases we discovered using the Google’s SK Tools, however to include all related long-tail keywords you could create a separated unique pages and have some quality content where you will talk about (i.e) Cheap Auto Insurance in New York, where your title and H1′s will look similar to this:
- Title: Cheap Auto Insurance in New York | Your Company Name
- H1: Cheap Auto Insurance in New York
- Permalink (URL) /cheap-auto-insurance will do just fine, however you can do /cheap-auto-insurance-new-york as well
Also it’s very important that your Title › H1 › Meta Description › Permalinks and content as well are all related to each other.

My site was not getting any traffic whatsoever, mostly because everything I did was not optimized the way you describe and the way it should be. We are included in local business center, but only under one keyword and that doesn’t really send us major traffic.

I didn’t do anything special to this site in the order to be indexed in Google Blogs search. Yes, I’ve noticed that seoagent.org gets picked up in seconds after the post was published.
Update your site frequently
Write unique, relevant content
Use platforms such as WordPress
