SEO Title Tags
November 27th, 2009 by OnlinePressCreating a better, but never perfect title tags for your SEO project
As you already know, there is no such thing as a perfect title tag, however you can do many things to improve your web visibility and site ranking performance by changing your unique title to more suitable solution without spam.
Title tag, what is that all about?
The title tag is your #1 component in better and higher search engine results page ranking (SERP) I am positively sure that it will stay like that as long as SEO exist or being supported by search engines.
How can you improve your title tags?
Anything on any site can be improved, one of them are the title tags. I’ve seen many sites where their owners are doing everything to improve their site rankings, however the most important factor is always getting left behind. The first step in creating better SEO title is to do keyword and keyword phrases discovery, you can start with Search-based keyword tool by Google, there are many other tools out there, but we will use Google’s SKTool this time.
Selecting the right SEO title
Here comes the fun part, how can you select the best keywords and keywords phrases without spamming the search engines and on top of that to look good, nicely put and easily readable to your audience? Remember, title tags must contain the keywords of the products or services you’re offering.
In this “lesson” I am getting into (local search engine optimization), so the target keywords will be in Chicago, Illinois.
Title Tag Keywords
chicago apartments – monthly searches 10,000*, now that we decided to go after chicago apartments, let’s find few more related keyword searches via Google SKTool shall we? Before we do that I just would like to say that it’s entirely up to you on what keywords you will be concentrating on. What I can suggest is to use all related throughout the site and simply divide around 3 keywords and/or keyword phrases on different pages, please note that it’s better when you have a unique page, than just repeated re-arranged words, search engines will like you much better.
Now that we talked about that, let’s go back to our title tags. On SKTool, I got many related keywords to our “chicago apartment” and just like the subtitle says, you cannot create the perfect tags, but you can improve them all.
Let’s take a stab on it:
<title>Chicago Apartments for Rent | Find Apartments in Chicago, IL</title>
Looks decent and easy to read, not only to search engines, but also to your visitors as well. The keywords that we are using are:
- Chicago Apartments
- For Rent
- Find Apartments
I am not saying that you should be using the same exact selection, but do try your best and avoid spam when you can.
<title>Chicago Apartments for Rent | Apartments for Rent in Chicago, IL</title>
In this example you’re having more aggressive SEO title tag, however I usually do not like using the same keywords back to back such as … Chicago Apartments | Apartments for rent … and they could potentially look and sound like spam, because we’re just rearranging the keywords around, sometimes that won’t really be much of the help.
Don’t write your title tags only for search engines
Try to avoid title tags used only for search engines, think about your visitors and listing visibility too.
<title>Chicago Apartments and Apartments for Rent in Chicago, IL</title>
Separate your keywords with ( – ) or ( | ) I like using pipes myself, however it’s completely your choice, just don’t use any special characters.
Follow, include the site title in your content area
It is always good idea to mention/include your title in your site content as well, not to mention the site meta description. And here is one of the examples how this could be optimized:
<title>Chicago Apartments for Rent | Apartments for Rent in Chicago, IL</title>
<meta name="description" content="Chicago apartments for rent and rentals with photos and floor plans. Search apartment listings for rent in Chicago, IL." />
< h1 >Chicago Apartments for Rent < / h1 >
Nothing will ever be perfect, there will be always a better title, regardless of what you can do. Remember to monitor your competition, “spy” what they do and “copy” but never follow.

Great post about SEO Title Tags, I always want to have more knowledge about those title tags.
Nice post! I tend to want to reinvent the wheel at times, but I resist when creating a good title tag. Type your keyword phrase into Google and see who pops up first. What is your competition doing? How is the title organized? How late does the keyword phrase appear in the title.
Remember, while a good title tag is good to have, nothing ever replaces quality content. No matter how good your SEO is, the best content is typically what surfaces to the top of the search results.
Interesting article, thanks for posting
Welcome to my blog guys, your comments are appreciated.
A very nice Topic. Thanks alot hope you go for the detail next time!
I’m using this service to monitor my website’s position – http://monitor.mazecore.com . They provide rank and uptime monitoring with alerts, but position monitoring on free account is enough for me. I recommend this service with free tariff for your website.
Title should be short and simple, to be user-friendy. It should contain page name, not spam of keywords (like many people belive title for). Because title is displayed on browser tab and used navigation, when many of them open.
By the way, it’s better to place name of article before name of blog (tip for blog owner).
Yes it is, blog/site name should be on the end.
Well, very informative and I wished to hear more of your tips. Thanks!
I was actually looking for posts like this and good thing you shared this one. Thanks alot!
